What Should You Do If You Smell Natural Gas?

If you notice a rotten-egg or sulfur-like odor, hear hissing near gas piping, or suspect a gas leak for another reason, treat it as an emergency. Gas leaks can cause fire or explosion, even without a noticeable odor.

Leave the building or affected area immediately. Encourage others to leave if safe. Do not search for the source or attempt to repair the problem yourself.

While leaving, do not use electrical switches, doorbells, garage-door openers, phones, or other devices near the suspected leak. Do not smoke, use a lighter, start a nearby vehicle, or operate the gas meter or valves.

Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 and the gas utility's emergency number. Stay away until emergency responders or the gas utility say it is safe to return. If the utility shuts off service, only authorized, qualified personnel should arrange the required inspection, repairs, and restoration.

Gas Line Installation Services

New Gas Lines for Appliances

Adding a gas range, clothes dryer, or water heater may require a new branch of gas piping. The existing supply, gas pressure, and pipe route need evaluation. Appliance location alone doesn't determine the correct connection.

Uncle's Plumbing can discuss the proposed appliance and determine whether the required piping work is within our service scope. For gas-fired water heater projects, see our water heater services and tankless water heater services.

Gas Piping for Remodels and Renovations

Moving a kitchen or changing equipment locations can affect existing gas connections. The route, pipe sizing, accessible shutoffs, and local requirements should be considered before new work begins. We can discuss the piping portion of a renovation.

Gas Piping for Commercial Properties

Offices, restaurants, and other businesses may have gas-fired equipment that depends on appropriate supply piping. System complexity affects the work. Contact us with the equipment and project details so we can confirm our capabilities. Learn more about our commercial plumbing services.

When Does a Gas Line Need Repair or Replacement?

Existing gas piping can develop problems because of corrosion, physical damage, deteriorating connections, or changes made during previous construction. Damaged buried piping may also require attention after excavation or landscaping work.

If a gas utility or qualified professional identifies a damaged customer-owned line, the repair may involve replacing a section of pipe or a larger run. The choice depends on the location, pipe condition, applicable requirements, and whether an acceptable repair can be completed safely.

Not every issue means all the gas piping must be replaced. However, a repeatedly failing or heavily deteriorated line may require more extensive work. We'll explain the recommended scope, not assume a small repair is enough.

If you currently suspect escaping gas, do not schedule a routine inspection as your first response. Evacuate and call 911 and the gas utility from a safe location.

How Our Gas Line Installation and Repair Process Works

1. Discuss the Project

Tell us whether you're adding an appliance, changing an existing connection, or following up after the utility identified a problem. For non-emergency work, knowing the appliance type, property layout, and location of the proposed piping helps us understand the request.

2. Evaluate the Piping and Requirements

The proposed route, pipe materials, supply capacity, existing system condition, and available access all affect the work. We also consider any required permits, inspections, and coordination with the gas utility or other qualified trades. Requirements vary by project and city.

3. Explain the Options and Pricing

We'll explain the proposed installation or repair and give upfront pricing before approved work begins. We'll explain any outside coordination before approval.

4. Complete Required Work and Checks

Gas piping must be installed or repaired using appropriate methods and must meet applicable safety requirements. Required pressure or leak testing, inspection, and utility authorization are handled as applicable to the project. Do not turn gas service back on yourself after a utility shutoff.

What Affects the Cost of Gas Line Installation or Repair?

There is no one-price answer for every gas line project. A short accessible appliance connection involves different work from replacing a buried gas line or routing piping through finished walls.

Pricing can depend on the distance of the run, access, pipe material and sizing, excavation or finish restoration, the condition of existing lines, and any required inspections or permits. An appliance needing more gas supply can affect the project.

Uncle's Plumbing provides upfront pricing for approved work. Describe your project when you call so we can discuss the appropriate evaluation and estimate process.

Gas Line Safety, Permits, and Underground Utilities

Gas piping should not be installed or repaired as a do-it-yourself project. The materials, connections, sizing, testing, and final authorization need to comply with applicable standards and local requirements. Whether a permit or inspection is required depends on the municipality and the work involved.

For an underground gas-line project, Texas811 requires contact at least two business days before excavation, excluding holidays and weekends. Utility-owned lines are marked through the 811 process; privately owned lines may need separate locating. No visible utilities does not mean digging is safe.

Work on utility-owned gas distribution equipment may be the utility's responsibility, not the plumbing contractor's. We'll discuss the proposed work and who needs to be involved before proceeding.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Lines

Calls Answered 24/7(817) 743-3113
  1. What Should I Do If I Smell Gas in My Home or Business?

Leave immediately and move to a safe distance. Do not try to find the leak, use light switches or phones near the affected area, start a nearby vehicle, or operate gas valves. Once you are safely away, call 911 and your natural gas utility's emergency line. Stay away until they confirm it is safe to return. After the immediate danger has been addressed, a qualified professional can discuss repairs to customer-owned piping as needed.

  2. Can a Plumber Install a Gas Line for a Stove or Water Heater?

Qualified gas-piping professionals can install appropriate supply piping for appliances when the work is within their licensed scope. The new appliance's gas demand, the existing supply, pipe sizing, and routing must be considered. Depending on the property, permits, inspection, and utility coordination may be required. Uncle's Plumbing can discuss a new stove, dryer, or gas water heater project and confirm whether we handle the work needed before providing an estimate.

  3. How Much Does Gas Line Installation or Repair Cost?

The cost depends on what is being installed or repaired, the length and accessibility of the piping, materials, existing system condition, and any excavation, permits, or testing involved. Repairing one accessible section is different from adding a long gas line to a new appliance. Uncle's Plumbing explains the proposed work and provides upfront pricing before approved work begins. Call (817) 743-3113 to discuss your project and estimate options.

  4. Do Gas Line Projects Need Permits and Pressure Testing in Texas?

Gas piping work may require permits, inspections, and testing depending on the city, project, and applicable rules. A properly completed installation or repair must meet the requirements that apply to that property. If utility service was disconnected for safety, reconnection may also require the utility's approval. Uncle's Plumbing can discuss the planned work and identify what requirements need to be confirmed before work begins.

  5. Can a Leaking Gas Line Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?

Sometimes a damaged section can be replaced without installing an entirely new piping system. In other cases, deterioration, multiple defects, accessibility, or applicable requirements may make broader replacement appropriate. A qualified professional must evaluate the condition and determine a safe repair method. If there is a suspected active leak, evacuate first and call 911 and the gas utility from a safe location; routine plumbing scheduling comes afterward.
